The GSProud campaign was started by our student board in 2014 to allow students publicly and proudly self-identify as first-generation and/or low-income (FGLI). The narratives shared highlighted how incredible FGLI students are and their achievements at, or after Georgetown and the importance of the visibility of the FGLI community. This week of programming included workshops and discussions on how to make Georgetown more class-inclusive, art shares, community dinners, and more. As a program that was started by a GSP student and remains student-centered, we take a lot of pride that our student leadership continues to make their voices heard and initiate change across Georgetown’s campus and beyond.

Currently, GSProud Week is the celebration and sharing of stories of the people who make up the FGLI community at Georgetown. Our week-long celebration now aligns with the national First-Generation College Celebration (FGCC) Day held on November 8th, which commemorates the signing of the Higher Education Act (“HEA”) of 1965 by then-President Lyndon B. Johnson. FGCC is an annual opportunity to raise awareness of the first-generation college student identity by advancing an asset-based, national narrative of these students’ experiences and outcomes. GSProud Week is intended to showcase the amazing contributions of the students in our program and also allow Georgetown community members outside of GSP, be they staff, faculty, or alumni to share their FGLI experiences as well. This week is an invitation for FGLI students, staff, faculty, and alumni at Georgetown to be in community, celebrate each other, and most importantly show off their #GSPride.

This year’s GSProud theme is “It’s GSPossible”: a celebration of the limitless opportunities, achievements, and success stories within our community, showcasing all that’s possible as a GSPer! It invites us to celebrate the spirit of GSP, a community where GSPers continue to defy limits and imagine new possibilities. As we reflect on how far we’ve come, we also look ahead to a future rooted in support and endless opportunity.

GSProud: Kickoff and Red Square Chalk Up

Join us as we kickoff the start of GSProud week on Monday, November 3rd from 12 to 3 PM in the HSFC Herman Room! GSPers, faculty, and staff are invited to eat delicious food, pick up some exclusive GSProud merch, and come share why they’re GSProud! Let’s kick off GSProud in style! Later that day at 8:30 PM we will transform Red Square into a canvas celebrating GSP’s successes and history! Grab your chalk and help us magnify GSP’s impact on Georgetown’s campus all while enjoying some warm pastries!

GSProud: Community Dinner

Join us for the GSProud Community Dinner from 6:00 PM to 7:30 PM in the GSP Lounge on Tuesday, November 4th. This is a wonderful opportunity to come together with your fellow GSPers, enjoy some delicious food, and celebrate our collective pride in our wonderful new lounge space!

GSProud: Networking with GSP Alumni

On Wednesday, November 5th, we are bringing GSP Alum back to the Hilltop! Join us from 6-7:30pm for a night of networking with former GSPers! Come prepared to network in a low stakes environment!

GSProud: Trivia Night

We’re bringing tombs style trivia to the GSP lounge on November 6th, from 6-9pm! Join us for a fun filled evening of trivia led by our GSP Student Board. Come for the chance to win up to $150 in prizes!

GSProud: GSPhoto

Our annual GSPhoto is the ultimate GSProud tradition. GSPers will gather on the Healy Steps at 1:05PM SHARP for a photo that represents our community and place on campus! Don’t miss the iconic GSPhoto event from 1-3 PM on Healy Steps, Friday November 7th! This will be the final chance to get your exclusive GSProud swag! We will have bagels from Call Your Mother!

GSProud: GSPaint and Sip

Join us for GSPaint and Sip, a creative gathering in McShain Lounge from 6:00-7:30 PM on Tuesday, November 7th. This event combines a guided paint session from Muse Paint Bar with delectable snacks from Compass Coffee, offering a space for community, self-reflection, and the celebration of our GSPowers. Don’t miss this inspiring evening of art and togetherness!

GSProud: First-Generation Faculty and Administrator Panel

Join us for a captivating discussion at the First-Generation Faculty Panel on Wednesday, November 8th from 6:30 PM to 7:30 PM in Lohrfink Auditorium, Rafik B. Hariri Building. Our esteemed panelists, including Pamela Fox (English Professor in College of Arts and Sciences), Roxanne Mirabal-Beltran (Assistant Professor in the School of Nursing), and Claudia Arias-Cirinna (Associate Vice President and Dean of Students), will candidly share their first-generation and/or low-income (FGLI) experiences. This educational event is not just for FGLI students, staff, and faculty; it’s an opportunity for the broader community to learn about this facet of identity and how to best support and advocate for their FGLI peers. Wear your new swag to commemorate the spirit and unity of our community, our actual photo will be taken at 2PM SHARP. This will be the final chance to get your proud swag! We will have food options. NASPA Center for First-Generation Student Success

Launched in June 2017, with the mission of being the premier source of evidence-based practices, professional development, and knowledge creation for the higher education community to advance the success of first-generation students. In continuing this mission, the Center launched First-gen Forward, the nation’s first recognition program acknowledging higher education institutions for their commitment to first-generation student success.
