Stahl Summer Scholars Program

Spring 2024 Dinner

Through the support of the Stahl Summer Scholars Award Program Endowed Fund, Georgetown University will award 5 rising seniors (Class of 2026) in the Georgetown Scholars Program a $10,000 award as a Stahl Summer Scholar in the pursuit of a summer experiential learning opportunity (ELO). This gift was imagined and made possible by GSP Graduate Shakila Guevara Stahl B’15 and her husband, Dr. Stephen Stahl.

The award will support the expenses of those scholars who, at the discretion of Georgetown, could not participate in these opportunities without support from the Fund.

Georgetown will select students according to the following guidelines:

  • The opportunities should, in the discretion of Georgetown, have the potential to be consequential and significant for students in terms of their future careers, networking, and/or scholarship;
  • The opportunities may be either domestic or international and may be paid or unpaid; and
  • The Fund will:
    1. A: support students who are participating in experiential learning opportunities anywhere in the U.S. or abroad; and
    2. B: ideally will support a minimum of one student per summer who is participating in a lab-based research experiential learning opportunity with possible publication outcomes.

Eligible students should submit an application if they are seeking financial support for an experiential learning opportunity such as an internship, externship, shadow opportunity, research, or social action/community-engaged project. The amount of the award may be prorated if the student is receiving funding for it from another entity. These “ELOs” can be a part of a study abroad program if not covered by summer financial aid. Students must be in good academic standing and conduct.

The experiential learning opportunity does NOT need to be finalized by the application deadline in order for the student to apply for this award, but the first installment of the financial award ($7,500) will not be disbursed without confirmation that the experiential learning opportunity will occur, ideally by June 1st. The second installment of the financial award will be disbursed after the Stahl Summer Scholar submits a reflection on their learning at the end of the summer.

The application is due by 9:00am ET on Monday, March 17, 2025. Exceptions cannot be made given the tight turnaround of the timeline. An interview or a request for further information may be required as part of the application process. Applicants will be notified approximately 2 weeks after the deadline. Questions about the Stahl Summer Scholars Experiences Fund or this application can be directed to penneraward@georgetown.edu.

For Summer 2025: If you apply for a Stahl Summer Scholars Program or the Idol Family Fellowship Program, and are unsuccessful in your application, you can be considered for a Penner Award with no need to submit an additional application!

Awardees will be invited to an event in May near campus with the Stahls.
