GSP Annual Graduation Celebration

The Georgetown Scholars Program celebrates this incredible milestone for our first-gen and low-income (FGLI) students annually alongside supporters and our students’ communities.

It is a joy to see the support systems – friends, family, loved ones, and mentors – that have helped students get to this wonderful place during Commencement Week. We have been blessed to be a part of many of our students’ journeys. We recognize the magnitutude that is reaching this moment for our first-gen community and celebrate it accordingly. Our grads receive commemorative items that call attention to this great feat – grad cords, pins, and more! Annually our opening remarks include a reflection from our graduating Student Board President to mark this special moment and our chairperson welcomes the graduates to our growing community of alumni trailblazers (over 2000!).

This event started as a small celebration in Riggs Library with GSP’s first class of 2009 (with about 60 seniors and their guests), as the brainchild of GSP’s Founding Board Chair Paul Goodrich C’65 and Student Board Member Whitney Sevesind C’09. Whitney and Paul noted back in the fall of 2008 that it would be nice to have a graduation event specifically to celebrate the achievement of – and express gratitude for – our students’ families (including chosen family!). The event was a huge hit and we soon outgrew Riggs with our attendees, so we moved to Fisher Colloquium in Hariri in 2016. And we now host an annual celebration that fills the great hall in the Healey Family Student Center with over 300 guests, including alumni mentors who often fly to campus to see their mentee graduate!

Other Senior Initiatives

Senior Graduation Grant: The program coordinates a senior grad grant annually to help offset the expenses associated with the special moment – travel and board for commencement, regalia, senior ball and more!

Upperclassmen Professional Development: Seniors also have access to our professional development fund to help with any expenses for their professional or post-graduation plans. Anything from professional attire to test-prep can be covered.

Senior Formals and Balls: We work with our partners in The Corp, the School of Foreign Service, and the Senior Class Committee to ensure special events like Corp Gala in the Fall, Diplomatic Ball in the Spring, and Senior Ball during commencement are financially accessible for our seniors.
