Class Chair Reflections

Barbara Felser Crocker (GSP Class of 1975)

In my role as AAP chair for South Florida, I recently read interview reports on 200 applicants (whew!), my share of the 16,000+ young persons who covet a Georgetown education.

All are seeking an amazing experience, hoping to benefit from Georgetown's myriad offerings, unmatched location, wonderful peer group, and the cura personalis factor. I don't envy Charlie's job, as the Dean of Admissions. He has to whittle that number down to the 3,100 who will receive letters of acceptance and will yield 2011's class of 1,550 men and women. Harder still is making sure that every single accepted student is financially able to attend - sure, we could have 1,550 capable full-paying freshmen students, but at what sacrifice?

The best and the brightest come from all walks of life, all states, all countries, all colors, shapes, and sizes. The opportunities that emerged during our time at Georgetown must be available to every student every year, regardless of his/her financial resources. All presidents, CEO's, doctors, lawyers, and ambassadors are not born wealthy, but each is born with the inspiration to succeed. We, as donors, must make their success a reality by helping them to pay the hefty price tag. With our contributions, GSP enables Georgetown to supplement traditional aid packages, resulting in our ability to win more of the best that might otherwise have attended another institution: their loss would be our loss.

When I think back on my years at Georgetown, I smile broadly. Some memories are more vivid than others, but all shape the person I am today. As I watch my children thrive there now, I imagine a future not only for them but for each of these qualified applicants. It makes me more proud - and more optimistic - than ever.

We must ensure that everyone has that chance, so together we should put our talents and treasures behind GSP. I am proud to be the Chair of the GSP Endowment Committee, as well as a GSP Class Chair and encourage all of you to participate!
